IMPERFECT PRODUCE REVIEW

Receive 20% off your first order at Imperfect Foods

This imperfect produce review of online grocer Imperfect Foods takes a look at the company’s approach to building a better, less wasteful, food system. The company offer a way to shop sustainable groceries, foods and ingredients that were overgrown, undersold into store, or cosmetically defective, at affordable prices.

If this is your first time ordering from Imperfect Foods, read my first and second review or use this code to receive 20% off your first order. And it was thanks to you guys. Seriously, the referrals of you all signing up to try Imperfect Foods sustained my subscription for the past year and then some.

Here are a few insights concluded over a 15-month timespan:

IMPERFECT PRODUCE REVIEW: FOOD QUALITY

Imperfect Foods has been my main source of groceries each week for over a year. As I sorted through my weekly orders, I noticed certain questions that would arise: How can I tell the quality of the food if I cannot see it before I select it? What is the quality standard I should expect of sustainable food that is overgrown or defective?

The grocery products cannot be seen prior to receiving them, a truth that is consistent with all online grocery services. I have never received a rotten piece of produce while shopping with Imperfect Foods. The worst quality experience to date was with a package of Uncured Bacon Ends and Pieces, a 12-oz portion of would-be discarded “ends and pieces”. The bacon was overly fatty and salty, yet still edible. This type of risk is one I am willing to take in support of sustainable food sourcing.

One time, an item was missing. Customer Service is available and accommodates refunds on the spot.

IMPERFECT PRODUCE REVIEW: TIME SAVER

Over the past 15 months I’ve received Imperfect Foods on a regular basis and the delivery service saves time. I consider the date when the groceries will be dropped off and I don’t have to schedule in time to go grocery shopping, which usually runs me 1-1.5 hours on average.

Imperfect Foods delivery service helps me keep a good amount of healthy produce on hand to create snacks and meals. The Wild Alaskan Salmon that comes per 1lb and frozen is a staple in the house. As is celery, Forager’s Unsweetened Cashew Yogurt, Quinn Peanut Butter Filled Pretzel Nuggets, Brown Rice Cakes, Imperfect Foods Creamy Unsalted Peanut Butter, 100% Cold Pressed Orange Juice and Cold Pressed Grapefruit Juice.

IMPERFECT PRODUCE REVIEW: PAUSING THE GROCERY DELIVERY SERVICE

Imperfect Foods has an easy to use online ordering system. The website is available as a phone app. Pause deliveries and pick them back up at any time. You can also take a break for 1-4 months or cancel indefinitely with no cost penalty.

Over the past 15 months, I have skipped weeks mainly due to travel. I held my deliveries for five weeks earlier this year when I was out of town. I picked them up upon my return with the click of a button.

CONCLUSION

In spite of food quality uncertainties, Imperfect Foods makes shopping for healthy kitchen staples and creative snacks possible with an easy to use digital interface and a time saving door-to-door grocery delivery service.
